The following policy was agreed at the Parochial Church Council (PCC) meeting held on 9 MARCH 2021
In accordance with the House of Bishops’ Policy Statements ‘Promoting a Safer Church’ (2017) and ‘Protecting All God’s Children’ 4th edition (2010) and the Diocesan Safeguarding Policy ‘Promoting a Safer Diocese’ (2018) our church is committed to:

  • Caring pastorally for victims/survivors of abuse and other affected persons.

  • Caring pastorally for those who are the subject of concerns or allegations of abuse and other affected persons.

  • Responding to those that may pose a present risk to others.

The Parish of St James’s Enfield Highway + Brimsdown will

  • Create a safe and caring place for all.

  • Have a named Church Safeguarding Officer (CSO) to work with the incumbent and the PCC to implement policy and procedures.

  • Safely recruit, train and support all those with any responsibility for children, young people and adults to have the confidence and skills to recognise and respond to abuse.

  • Ensure that there is appropriate insurance cover for all activities involving children and adults undertaken in the name of the parish.

  • Display in church premises and on the Parish website the details of who to contact if there are safeguarding concerns or support needs.

  • Listen to and take seriously all those who disclose abuse.

  • Take steps to protect children and adults when a safeguarding concern of any kind arises, following House of Bishops guidance, including notifying the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA) and statutory agencies immediately.

  • Ensure that health and safety policy, procedures and risk assessments are in place and that these are reviewed annually.

  • Each person who works within this church community will agree to abide by this policy and the guidelines established by this church.

St James's appoints DENISE CLARKE as the Church Safeguarding Officer and ABIOLA AKINKUGBE as Deputy CSO.

An excerpt from the Parish Safeguarding Report (May 2021) from Denise Clarke, our CSO:

Abiola and I still remain your safeguarding officers at St James’s.  Our role is to ensure that every person at St James’s is committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults to worship and grow safely in Christ.

We will challenge any abuse of power by anyone who in a position of trust.  We will seek to offer pastoral care and support to anyone who has suffered abuse, developing with them appropriate pastoral support.

We will also seek to include supervision and referral to the proper authorities, to any member of our church community known to have offended against a child, young person or adult.

To facilitate this we ensure that all paid staff and volunteers who are working directly with children or vulnerable adults have an up to date DBS check or have completed a confidential declaration form. In addition they all need to have completed level one training.

Please refer to our policy statement above for more information.

If you do have any safeguarding concerns relating to St James’s, please do contact the Vicar on 07944 25 25 23, or Abbie and I via email: safeguarding@stjameschurch.cc or me via my personal mobile: 07984 481 438.
